The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has joined forces with the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) and the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to tackle the issue of road accidents and fatalities across the nation. This collaboration seeks to enhance road safety awareness among Fijian road users by utilizing the significant influence of rugby players and the extensive outreach capabilities of the FRU.
LTA Chief Executive, Irimaia Rokosawa, highlighted the importance of sports, especially rugby, in molding public attitudes and behaviors in Fiji. He emphasized that rugby players, revered and respected throughout the country, are ideally positioned to promote responsible road practices.
“This innovative partnership acknowledges the vital role of sports in fostering a culture of road safety,” Rokosawa stated. The collaborative initiative intends to cultivate a sense of community responsibility regarding road safety over the next four years.
“Rugby is a powerful uniting force in Fiji, and the impact of players transcends the sports arena. Through our alliance with the FRU, we aim to convey a powerful message that road safety is a shared responsibility,” he added.
The General Manager of the Fiji Rugby Union’s Commercial, Broadcast & Marketing division, Avnil Pratap, also reiterated the FRU’s commitment to the health and safety of Fijians, both on and off the field. “Rugby players are influential figures in our communities, and their advocacy can inspire positive changes,” Pratap remarked.
He concluded by stressing the hope that this partnership will motivate the public to prioritize road safety and encourage responsible behavior among all road users.
This initiative not only promotes a crucial message about road safety but also highlights the positive influence that sports can have on societal issues, aiming for a safer environment for all Fijians. The collaboration between prominent organizations and respected figures is a promising step toward achieving lower accident rates and increased awareness in the community.
