Former Olympic gold medallist Masivesi Dakuwaqa is in serious trouble after reportedly biting teammate Pierre Pagès during an altercation in France. The incident occurred after a night out, leading Pagès to require 20 stitches for a wound on his cheek.
As reported by the RugbyRama website, Dakuwaqa was taken into police custody following the altercation with Pagès, though he did not provide a clear explanation for his actions. He purportedly admitted to biting Pagès but claimed to have no recollection of the night’s events.
Sources indicate that the confrontation may have arisen from a financial dispute, and it escalated when Pagès attempted to mediate between Dakuwaqa and another player. After the incident, Pagès was transported to a hospital for treatment, while Dakuwaqa was arrested on-site.
In light of the incident, Dakuwaqa has been suspended from Biarritz Olympique and is set to face court proceedings in May 2025. The club could have potential grounds for terminating his contract without compensation.
Dakuwaqa joined Biarritz on a two-year contract following a notable career that included stints at Montpellier, Western Force, and Toulon, as well as representing the Flying Fijians in their 2021 November Tour.
This incident serves as a cautionary reminder of how quickly situations can escalate, especially in the high-pressure environment of professional sports. Fans of rugby and Dakuwaqa will undoubtedly hope for a resolution that allows for a positive path forward for both the player and the team.
