Meleama Tumalevu, a talented winger for the Ba Under-14 girls’ rugby team, is competing in memory of her late mother, who passed away in September after battling breast cancer. Tumalevu, who expressed her initial surprise at being selected for the team, shared the emotional weight of her loss, while also expressing gratitude for the support of her father during this difficult time.

Reflecting on her mother, Tumalevu recounted how she used to cheer her on at matches, providing guidance on safe play. Encouraged by her father to focus on her abilities and channel her grief positively, Tumalevu remains determined to excel both on the field and academically, aspiring to join the Fijian Drua women’s team.

The 14-year-old student from Ratu Rusiate Nabuta Memorial School hails from Tawava village in Kadavu and has familial ties to Nailaga Village in Ba. Aside from rugby, she competes in athletics, including the 400m, 200m, and relay events, and plays netball as a Goal Attack. Despite facing challenges in their matches during the Vodafone Kaji rugby competition, Tumalevu remains optimistic, believing in her team’s potential to reach the finals and clinch the trophy.

Tumalevu has a family connection to the former captain of Fiji’s men’s sevens team, Waisea Nacuqu, as her uncle. She draws strength from her faith, reminding herself and teammates of their motto, which emphasizes perseverance and determination.

This story of resilience highlights the power of sports in overcoming personal adversities and provides an inspiring reminder that dedication and teamwork can help individuals tackle life’s challenges. Tumalevu not only embodies the spirit of sportsmanship but also serves as a beacon of hope for young athletes coping with loss.

With her aspirations and drive, Meleama Tumalevu is certainly one to watch as she continues her rugby journey.
