Maika Ratuvere, an 18-year-old from Bagata, Cakaudrove, who played a key role as fullback for the Under-18 Deans trophy-winning team, is looking to build a career in medicine alongside his passion for rugby. He aims to become a nurse or health inspector, reflecting his commitment to helping others after his sports career.

Recent efforts saw Ratuvere competing for the Queen Victoria School (QVS) old boys’ Under-19 side at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament. Post-Deans competition, he expressed a desire to assess his fitness level in sevens rugby.

Ratuvere shared that his time at QVS has provided him with invaluable experiences, promoting independence and fostering deep connections with his teammates. His rugby journey began during the Kaji rugby days, where he played for both the Nasinu and Tailevu teams. Additionally, his background includes stints in rugby league as a halfback with his school’s U15 side.

Despite facing injuries throughout his rugby career, he remains passionate about the sport and is dedicated to showcasing his talent. He emphasizes the importance of balancing academics with athletic commitments, acknowledging the challenges while striving to manage both effectively.

Having been previously named to the Under-18 Fiji Secondary School extended squad, he was unfortunately sidelined due to injury, but he remains resilient in his pursuit of excellence in both sports and academics. Ratuvere also has family ties to Batiri village in Nadroga and enjoys playing volleyball during his free time. Currently, he is focused on enhancing his fitness and seeking holiday employment opportunities.

Ratuvere’s story embodies the spirit of resilience and ambition, demonstrating that with dedication and hard work, young talents can successfully navigate their dual aspirations in sports and academics, ultimately contributing positively to their communities.

This reflects not only a hopeful outlook for aspiring athletes but also the importance of prioritizing education and skills alongside sports to ensure a well-rounded future.
