The first semi-final of the Suva Rugby Union Escott Shield will feature a matchup between Army Green and Fresh’et Navy on Saturday. In the other semi-final, the Eastern Saints, led by Seremaia Bai, will compete against SCB Police.
SRU secretary Nemani Tuifagalele confirmed the semi-final fixtures yesterday, stating that the venue for both matches is yet to be finalized. Oceania has reserved Buckhurst and Bidesi Park, but Laucala grounds are currently not available.
“We’ve booked the USP grounds but are working to secure the best location for the semi-finals,” Tuifagalele explained. “At this point, it will either be at the USP grounds or Suva Grammar grounds.”
He anticipated an exciting match this weekend, urging fans to attend what is expected to be one of the most thrilling semi-finals. “While the venue is still to be confirmed, the competition this season has been notably intense,” he noted, emphasizing that it is too early to make predictions, as all four teams competing are strong contenders.
SCB Police are regarded as favorites, having recently triumphed over Lomaiviti in a challenging quarter-final. The team boasts experienced players such as veteran Number 8 James Brown and Paris Olympics silver medallist Terio Tamani. “Police is a formidable opponent; they are the defending champions and have a strong history with the Escott Shield,” Tuifagalele said, recalling that last year they narrowly defeated Fresh’et Navy 13-11 in a tightly contested final at Buckhurst Park, Suva.
He also commended Lomaiviti for their impressive performance in the quarter-finals. “We have maintained the same number of teams over the last two years, but the intensity and quality of the competition have steadily improved each year,” he added. “This is a testament to the hard work and dedication towards grassroots development, which is yielding positive results at the club level.”
