Fiji Under-20 rugby player Thomas Setitaia is gearing up for a significant challenge as he prepares to face former teammates from the Moana Pasifika U20 squad turned rivals in the Oceania Rugby U20 Championship. As the championship kicks off today at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, Setitaia expresses excitement about competing against athletes he once trained alongside.

Setitaia, who has made a name for himself in earlier competitions, including the Super Rugby U20 tournament, emphasizes the personal stakes involved in the upcoming matches against Tonga and Samoa. He notes, “There are a couple of fellow teammates that I was with in Moana. They’ll be looking to take my head off. I already know that, so I’ll be excited.”

The young flanker expresses immense pride in representing Fiji, viewing this experience as one of the highest achievements in his young career. He states, “It was actually pretty special. It’s probably the highest achievement I’ve accomplished so far… Now it’s just about doing the job and representing my family name.”

In preparation for the championship, Setitaia has been training intensely, focusing on his role while maintaining confidence in his teammates. His remarks highlight the emerging talent within the Fiji Under-20 squad, showcasing their dedication and resilience as they look forward to international challenges.

The tournament provides an opportunity not just for individual recognition but also signifies a positive movement towards nurturing young talent in Fijian rugby, inspiring future generations. As the team takes to the field, there is a hopeful sense that they can bring pride to their nation and advance the growth of rugby in Fiji, making this more than just another championship—it’s a vital step for the next wave of rugby stars.
