Kaveni Roseru, a front row player for the Kaiviti Silktails, recently explored the world of sevens rugby while competing for the Under-19 Senikau club at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament. Although Roseru traditionally plays rugby league, he is keen to expand his skills in this format.
“My experience is primarily in rugby league,” Roseru expressed. Last year, he played as a flanker for Naitasiri Secondary School during the Deans rugby competition, and also represented his school’s U19 side in the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition. Reflecting on his league experience, he noted, “We faced tough competition and lost to Ratu Kadavulevu School in the quarterfinals for both rugby league and rugby union in the same season.”
Roseru’s dedication to the sport caught the attention of Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata, who approached him after the U19 finals. Following this, he was fortunate to represent the Junior Fiji Bati team in a match against the Australian Schoolboys last year, which ultimately led to his recruitment as a rookie for the Silktails. Now in his second year with the club in the Jersey Flegg competition, he feels grateful and blessed for the opportunities presented to him.
Hailing from Nukuloa village in Naitasiri, Roseru attributes his success to his strong support system. “I’m humbled by the talent God has given me,” he stated, adding that his parents encourage him to remain patient and determined in his pursuit of rugby aspirations. He emphasizes the importance of youth listening to their parents, suggesting that opportunities will arise for those who do.
Roseru has faced challenges, including training that required him to walk or run from his village to school. Despite these hurdles, his unwavering belief in his potential has kept his spirits high. He aims to secure a contract with an overseas team in the National Rugby League (NRL), aspiring to progress in his career.
The Jersey Flegg competition has presented him with valuable lessons in discipline and a fast-paced style of play. He finds motivation in his parents’ struggles, using their experiences to fuel his ambitions. Additionally, he looks up to Fiji Bati second-row player Viliame Kikau and dreams of representing the Fiji Bati team, particularly after recently witnessing them play in his homeland.
In conclusion, Roseru’s journey illustrates a remarkable blend of talent, resilience, and gratitude, showcasing the importance of commitment and support in the pursuit of sports excellence. As he continues to strive for his NRL dream, he serves as an inspiring model for young athletes everywhere.
