Lomaivuna High School is making remarkable strides in overcoming the aftermath of a devastating fire that destroyed four classrooms and critical training equipment last year. Despite these obstacles, the school has proudly entered three teams—under-15, under-17, and under-19—into the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition, which has recently kicked off with matches being held throughout the eastern and western regions of Fiji.
This rugby competition is a key platform for youth engagement, boasting over 100 teams participating nationally. In the South-East division, the matches took place at St. Marcelin primary school, with participation from 10 teams in the U15 category, 8 in U17, and 7 in U19.
Assistant coach Manasa Radrotini addressed the challenges faced due to inadequate training facilities and limited resources but emphasized the team’s unwavering dedication. He noted, “A small donation allowed us to get some equipment, and efforts are underway to rebuild our classrooms.” Radrotini outlined that the primary focus is on providing players with invaluable competitive experiences, stating, “The results will come with time; they just need to stay disciplined and take it one game at a time.”
He believes rugby can serve as an essential means of guiding youth away from negative influences, such as drugs and crime, and teaches them significant life skills, discipline, and healthy habits. “Youths today face toxic environments, but rugby teaches them discipline and life skills to help in their future,” Radrotini remarked.
In their opening matches, Lomaivuna High’s U15 team secured a solid victory, defeating Ratu Sukuna Memorial School 16-6, while the U19 team faced a challenging game, losing 4-12 against Nasinu Secondary School. The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition will continue weekly until the grand final scheduled for April 26.
This situation highlights the resilience and determination of Lomaivuna High School’s students and staff. Their commitment to sports amidst adversity is truly inspirational. It underscores the vital role sports can play in encouraging youth, steering them toward positive activities, and nurturing hope for the future.
The local community’s support is crucial in enhancing both educational and sports programs, showcasing how collective efforts can uplift young athletes’ spirits and opportunities. This unity will not only strengthen school programs but will also foster a thriving environment for the youth to develop their skills and character.
