Two-time Olympic gold medallist Jerry Tuwai has signed with the Mumbai Dreamers as the team gears up for the inaugural Rugby Premier League (RPL) sevens competition in India, commencing June 15. Tuwai’s arrival, alongside fellow player Waisea Nacuqu, was met with enthusiasm when they touched down in Mumbai over the weekend.

Joining Tuwai and Nacuqu are Australian athletes Henry Hutchinson and Aaron Cummings from the USA, both eager to showcase their talents. “I’m stoked to be representing the city (Mumbai),” Hutchinson expressed, emphasizing his commitment to bringing the speed and resilience of Australian rugby to the competition. Cummings added his determination to demonstrate the essence of sevens rugby from America.

In addition to the Dreamers, notable players like lanky forward Joseva Talacolo and Filipe Sauturaga have reported to the Chennai Bulls. The league promises to be a landmark event in Indian rugby, taking place over a span of 15 days at the Andheri Sports Complex in Mumbai. With the backing of World Rugby, the RPL has been allocated a unique 15-day window, ensuring it operates without overlap from other international rugby competitions.

Six franchise clubs are participating: Mumbai Dreamers, Chennai Bulls, Delhi Redz, Hyderabad Heroes, Kalinga Black Tigers, and Bengaluru Bravehearts. Players like Terio Tamani and newcomer Joji Nasova will add to the competitive dynamic, while New Zealand’s Tomasi Cama Jnr will coach the Delhi Redz.

This initiative represents a significant opportunity to raise rugby’s profile in India, attracting a blend of local and international talent. The emergence of the Rugby Premier League hopes to inspire future generations of players and enhance the sport’s visibility in a growing market. By showcasing this unique talent blend, the league aims to cultivate a vibrant rugby community and potentially pave the way for India’s qualification for the Olympics by 2032.
