The John Ian Nasson Sanday Duavata Rugby Grand 7s tournament has commenced today at the Tailevu North College ground in Korovou, featuring a competitive lineup of 32 men’s teams and six women’s teams over the course of two days. This marks the first significant event organized by the Duavata Rugby Club tournament committee, following the success of two mini 7s events last year.
Tournament director Waisake Tanidrala Matanavou expressed that the initiative aims to engage the youth in sports, steering them away from criminal activities while fostering grassroots rugby development in the region. Matanavou emphasized the dual purpose of the event: to nurture athletes for larger local tournaments and to create job opportunities through rugby, both domestically and internationally.
Spectators can anticipate high-stakes matches as teams like Viti Roofing Devo Babas, recently victorious at the Fiji Bitter Tabadamu 7s in Navua, take to the field alongside formidable opponents such as DXC Army Green and Navy. A unique aspect of this tournament is that it serves as a scouting ground for Northland Rugby Union selectors, who will be assessing talent for their extended squad ahead of the Vanua Cup.
Proceeds from the tournament will be directed towards building a clubhouse and gym for the club, aiming to bolster rugby development in the area. Matanavou has invited local residents to support the event, promising an exciting experience filled with outstanding rugby action. Entry fees are set at $5 for adults, $3 for secondary school students, and free for primary school students.
This event not only showcases the passion for rugby in Fiji but also embodies the community’s commitment to supporting youth and promoting active lifestyles, encapsulating a shared vision of unity and progress through sport. The enthusiasm surrounding the tournament highlights the vital role rugby plays in bringing the community together while inspiring the next generation of athletes.
