Students from Nakorotubu Secondary School in Ra made their debut at the Maritime 7s tournament, marking a significant milestone for the young school established in 2021. The school caters to around 105 students from nearby villages, including Nabokadra, Nayavutoka, Verevere, and Saioko.

According to Team Manager Ratu Mua Cavuilati, the players have fully embraced the experience of competing against well-established schools. He shared that this exposure is crucial for the students, allowing them to visit the city, interact with fellow students, and enjoy the sport of rugby during their high school years. “This is their first time, and they are so excited about it, that’s why, as you can see, whatever the result, they still came out smiling,” he noted.

Their journey to the tournament was not without challenges. The school faced two significant flash floods prior to the Coca-Cola Games, disrupting the school’s activities and forcing an early closure. This left the team with only three days to prepare for the Sevens. Nevertheless, the team maintained their confidence in the students’ readiness to compete.

Community support played an essential role in their participation. The families from the surrounding villages provided cassava and fish to feed the students in Suva, demonstrating a collective effort to support the team despite tight financial circumstances. Additionally, arrangements were made for camping in Narere, Nasinu, where relatives hosted and cooked meals for the players, easing the school’s financial burden.

The Maritime 7s event not only delivered exciting rugby action but also highlighted the inspiring stories off the field. The spirit of community and perseverance among the students and staff reflects the broader impact of sports in nurturing youth and building resilience, with hopes for continued growth and opportunity in their athletic journeys.

The Nakorotubu Secondary School’s participation serves as a reminder of the transformative power of sports, fostering teamwork, discipline, and community spirit among young athletes. Their journey is not just about the games but also about the invaluable life experiences gained through competition and camaraderie.
