The young Kaite rugby team from Naitasiri demonstrated resilience as they took part in the Junior Clubs Rugby Tens tournament in Suva last Saturday. Despite the logistical hurdles posed by the distance from their home village of Nakorosule, the team, consisting of pupils from Naitasiri Secondary School and surrounding areas, showed remarkable enthusiasm and talent on the field.
Team official Kemueli Senokonoko shared insights into their preparation, highlighting that players engaged in self-directed training at home, while those residing in Suva practiced daily at Ram Lakhan Park in Samabula. Senokonoko expressed gratitude for such competitive opportunities, emphasizing their role in keeping young people engaged and away from societal issues like drug abuse. He noted, “We thought they could participate here so they are kept occupied and to pick out raw talent that may represent the nation in the future.”
The primary obstacle the Kaite team faced was financial, underscoring the challenges grassroots teams often confront. However, their commitment to the sport and to each other showcases the positive impact of community engagement in sports, cultivating not only athletic abilities but also teamwork and discipline among the participants.
As the rugby season progresses, there is hope that with continued support and increased resources, these young athletes may indeed pave the way for future national representatives, contributing positively to Fiji’s sporting landscape.
