Meleama Tumalevu, a winger for the Ba girl’s Under-14 rugby team, is competing in the tournament to honor her late mother, who lost her battle with breast cancer in September. Despite her deep sadness, Tumalevu expresses gratitude for her father’s support during this difficult time.

Reflecting on her mother’s guidance, she recalls how her mother always encouraged her to play smart and avoid injuries. Tumalevu mentioned that her father advised her to focus on giving her best in the game rather than dwell on her mother’s death, especially as she joined her teammates at their training camp.

With ambitions to play for the Fijian Drua women’s team, Tumalevu draws inspiration from Fijiana lock Asinate Serevi, appreciating her agility and strength on the field. Additionally, she hopes to further her rugby career at Natabua High School or Ba Methodist High School, both of which have strong programs for girls’ rugby.

At just 14 years old, in addition to her rugby pursuits, Tumalevu is quite the athlete, participating in events such as the 400m, 4x100m, and 4x400m relays, as well as netball, where she plays as Goal Attack.

After the Ba girl’s team faced a tough 21-14 loss to Taveuni during Day One of the Vodafone Kaji rugby competition at HFC Bank Stadium, their coach encouraged them to further enhance their performance. Tumalevu remains optimistic about their prospects, believing in her team’s talent and potential to reach the finals and bring home the trophy.

Drawing strength from her faith and family ties, including her relationship with former Fiji men’s sevens captain Waisea Nacuqu, Tumalevu emphasizes that trusting in God has helped her navigate her grief. She resonates with her team’s motto, expressing that with determination and faith, they can overcome any challenges they face.

This young athlete’s story is one of resilience and hope, serving as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, pursuing one’s passions can be a source of strength and unity.

Summary: Meleama Tumalevu, a young rugby player from the Ba girl’s Under-14 team, is playing in memory of her deceased mother. She is motivated to excel in rugby, with aspirations of joining the Fijian Drua women’s team, while also participating in various athletic events. Despite facing recent losses, her faith and determination drive her and her team to aim for success in upcoming competitions.
