While many students are indulging in holiday jobs and festive activities this season, 16-year-old Ilaitia Tagicakibau has chosen a different path. The Sila Central High School student has committed himself to the district rugby team, participating in the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori.

This marks Tagicakibau’s debut with the Nakelo Babas team, and he expresses his lifelong passion for rugby. “I started playing rugby ever since I was young,” he shared. His dedication is evident as he prays for opportunities to excel in the sport and build a career from it. Encouraged by a fellow youth from his village, he began training with the team and quickly became an active participant in tournaments.

Tagicakibau’s coach emphasizes the importance of treating each game as a final, reinforcing a competitive spirit. He looks up to Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians flanker Kitione Salawa, drawing inspiration from his playing style, especially since Tagicakibau himself plays in the flanker position at the under-16 level. Additionally, he also represents his school in rugby league as a center.

Support from his family fuels Tagicakibau’s ambition, but he remains resilient in the face of criticism. He actively seeks advice from seasoned players to enhance his skills, hoping to become a professional rugby player. However, he keeps a practical mindset with a backup plan to enlist in the British Army should his rugby dreams not materialize.

This story showcases the determination and ambition of young athletes like Tagicakibau, who are willing to forego typical holiday leisure to pursue their goals. His journey reflects the power of passion and perseverance, serving as an inspiration to other youth who aspire to achieve greatness in sports or any chosen path.
