The Drua Foundation, in collaboration with the New Zealand Government, has launched a new initiative aimed at connecting remote communities in Fiji through rugby, while simultaneously promoting health and education. This initiative underscores the shared passion for rugby that both nations possess.

Taking place from August 19–22, the Drua Foundation will conduct a four-day training program in Naitasiri to enhance the skills of local coaches and officials. A significant focus will be on fostering women’s participation in the sport. The culmination of this program will be a Rugby 7s tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park, featuring U14 boys’ and U16 girls’ teams from the Serua, Naitasiri, and Namosi regions.

Charlotte Darlow, the New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, stated that the program aims to instill positive messages in children about the importance of education, respect, and healthy living. Participants will benefit from access to globally recognized courses, including World Rugby Level 1 First Aid, Introduction to Coaching, and Strength and Conditioning for Children, enabling them to implement structured rugby programs in their communities.

The New Zealand Government has pledged FJ$87,000 to support this initiative through the Pacific Sports for Development Fund. Mark Evans, CEO of the Fijian Drua, lauded this partnership, emphasizing the team’s commitment to supporting rural communities and expanding such initiatives further in the future.

This initiative aligns with previous efforts undertaken by the Drua Foundation, including their commitment to developing local rugby talent through the Drua Academy, which focuses on keeping young players in Fiji rather than pursuing opportunities abroad. The Foundation has previously engaged over 800 children through its Anchor Kids Club and aims to continue promoting healthy lifestyles and personal development through rugby.

The Drua Foundation serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating how sports can unite communities and foster positive growth among youth, while ensuring that the passion for rugby continues to thrive in Fiji.
