The Fijian rugby community came together to honor the life of Josaia Raisuqe during a heartfelt church service held at the Pompes Funèbres Alizés funeral home in Castres, France. Family, teammates, and fellow Fijian rugby players gathered to pay their respects to the late 30-year-old winger for Castres Olympique and former Fiji 7s Olympic silver medallist. Raisuqe tragically lost his life in a road accident on May 8.
Prominent figures from both the Top 14 and Pro D2 leagues, including Leone Nakarawa, Jiuta Wainiqolo, and Josua Tuisova, attended the service alongside a supportive Fijian community that included French Army officers and former national representatives. The gathering was marked by poignant moments as fellow players laid mats where Raisuqe’s casket was placed and shared heartfelt messages of condolence.
Wainiqolo described the occasion as “a solemn event” filled with emotion, underscoring the deep sense of loss felt by attendees. Raisuqe’s parents, Tevita and Mereani Raisuqe, were particularly touched by the outpouring of love and support from the rugby fraternity.
Ahead of his final journey to be laid to rest in Lutu, Naitasiri, Raisuqe’s body is set to leave France for burial. This follows his parents’ recent attendance at a Castres match, where players from both teams came together in an emotional tribute, singing the gospel song “We Shall Overcome.”
Throughout his career, Raisuqe made a significant impact on rugby, not only through his skill on the field but also through his character and commitment to his community. Tributes continue to pour in, celebrating his legacy and the inspiration he provided to future generations, reflecting the strong sense of unity within the rugby community.
The togetherness displayed during these challenging times serves as a reminder that even in grief, hope and the spirit of camaraderie can shine through, ensuring that Raisuqe’s memory will live on in the hearts of many.
