Vatulele, a picturesque island off Fiji’s Coral Coast, is renowned for its endemic red prawns and the beautiful masi designs that reflect the vibrancy of iTaukei culture. Recently, the island hosted the third annual Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s, a rugby tournament that took place at the Vatulele District School from December 19-20. This event saw local teams competing for glory while also contributing to community development.
The tournament was initiated by Ekubu villagers Vilive Qionikorolevu and Asesela Naborisi, who aimed to give back to their community. With the motivation of raising funds for a new walkway at the district school, they took on the roles of tournament director and treasurer, respectively. This year’s event was particularly special, having been held locally rather than at various locations as in previous years.
As participants traveled to the island via fiberglass boats from Korolevu landing, they experienced a mix of exhilarating and turbulent seas. Upon arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the community, showcasing the renowned Fijian hospitality.
The competition commenced on a bright Thursday morning, despite some teams unable to attend, leading to a mix of automatic wins and intensified rivalries among remaining teams. The relentless spirit of competition peaked on the final day, where the TEMC Warriors, led by semi-professional coach Semi Kunatani, showcased exceptional skill, ultimately clinching the title with a 34-5 victory against Gold Coast Senibiau.
The tournament was not just about rugby; it also served to highlight the values of community, teamwork, and the importance of youth engagement in sports. Teams like Naboutini and Hydro Bukuya emerged victorious in other categories, reinforcing the idea that sports can foster unity and provide positive outlets for young individuals, steering them away from negative influences.
As the Fiji Times team, who traveled to document the event, returned to the mainland, they reflected on the transformative experience of living in a slower-paced island environment, reminding us of the simple joys often overlooked in urban life. The successful execution of the tournament and plans for future events emphasize the spirit of collaboration and community in Vatulele.
This year’s Vatulele 7s showcased not just athleticism, but the power of community-driven initiatives. With plans for next year’s tournament already in motion, the burgeoning tradition promises to continue fostering connections and inspiring local youth. It serves as a reminder that through unity and shared goals, communities can uplift each other and thrive together.
