The Waisale Serevi Academy of Rugby is making impressive strides just five months after its inception, marking a significant achievement in youth development and anti-drug advocacy. Founded by Fijian rugby icon Waisale Serevi, the academy emerged from conversations about Fiji’s growing drug challenges, notably one held between Serevi and Coach Sakaraia Labalaba during a trip to India.
Serevi’s passion for this initiative prompted him to act swiftly, securing a partnership with the Fiji Sports Council to utilize Lawaqa Park in Rakiraki, ensuring a home for the academy for the next three to four years. He and his wife have personally invested nearly $7,000 to kickstart operations, demonstrating a strong commitment to the cause despite initial financial uncertainties. Serevi famously declared, “Dollars or no dollars, it has to go, because of the youth,” underlining his conviction to serve the community.
In a short time, the academy has garnered support from local businesses, including ASCO Motors and Aqua Pacific, which recognized its potential to positively impact young athletes through training and essential tools.
As part of its mission, the academy actively engages with the youth, offering not only rugby training but also vital discussions about societal issues, focusing on drug prevention. The themes from its recent rugby camps, emphasizing resilience and the importance of saying “no” to drugs, resonate deeply with participants.
