Suva City Council (SCC) executive chairperson Tevita Boseiwaqa has acknowledged that a shortage of rubbish trucks is causing disruptions in waste collection services. This response comes in light of increasing complaints from residents in Bayview Heights, Suva, about the unpleasant odors emanating from piles of uncollected rubbish accumulating along the roadside.
Resident Jotame Baleiwai expressed his dissatisfaction with the SCC, noting the absence of communication regarding the delays in waste collection. While the council has been picking up regular kitchen waste, larger rubbish piles have been left unattended for several days. Another resident, Losana Raikibeqa, has voiced concern about the health risks these heaps of rubbish pose, citing unbearable smells that attract pests.
Raikibeqa mentioned that the situation worsens on rainy days, forcing her family to keep their windows shut. She noted that her family, especially her grandchildren who pass by the rubbish daily on their way to school, have suffered health issues, indicating a direct correlation between the waste and their illnesses.
Meanwhile, some residents have reported that outsiders have started using their area as a dumping ground, exacerbating the existing waste problem.
In response to these concerns, Mr. Boseiwaqa stated that the SCC is aware of the residents’ troubles and is looking into alternative solutions to enhance service delivery. The council has begun hiring additional garbage trucks at a significant expense of approximately $500 per trip, which adds up to around $2000 for four trips daily.
He also emphasized a lack of awareness among residents regarding waste collection schedules and urged individuals to take responsibility for maintaining a clean community, noting that the garbage collectors primarily handle only household kitchen waste.
Through these challenges, there is a sense of hope as the SCC is actively seeking solutions to mitigate the situation. Improved communication and community engagement can greatly enhance the effectiveness of waste management, leading to a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents.
