The existing administrative framework for managing Rotuman affairs is coming under scrutiny for failing to effectively serve the island’s inhabitants. Oinafa resident Filipe Makrava voiced his concerns during the recent Electoral Law Review consultations, highlighting that despite promises from various ministries, the crumbling infrastructure remains a pressing issue.

According to Makrava, there are two channels through which matters are routed: one goes from the District Office of Rotuma through the Commissioner Eastern, then to the relevant ministry, while the other reaches the Prime Minister directly. However, he criticized both routes for not providing an efficient resolution to urgent needs, especially as vital projects like road maintenance are delayed indefinitely.

He pointed out the deterioration of roads over the past two years, stating, “The roads have been getting worse and worse.” Despite being assured that the Public Works Department (PWD) would address the situation, residents remain uncertain about the outcome, emphasizing the frustration felt by those waiting for action.

This issue reflects broader infrastructure challenges across other regions of Fiji. Similar articles have noted the Public Works Minister, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, expressing dissatisfaction with the slow progress of infrastructure upgrades, particularly in maritime areas like Rotuma. The government acknowledges the critical need for effective oversight and resource management, as poor infrastructure impairs access to essential services like education and safety.

With the Ministry of Public Works under scrutiny for inadequate maintenance, there is a glimmer of hope as ongoing discussions and pressure from both residents and political leaders could inspire constructive reforms. Addressing these infrastructure issues not only presents an opportunity to improve conditions on Rotuma but could also enhance the quality of life for many Fijians. Improved communication and accountability from the government could ultimately lead to a more responsive and effective approach to infrastructure development.
