Fiji’s agriculture sector is facing a significant challenge with the emergence of root-knot nematodes, pests that invade plant roots and impede nutrient uptake. Minister for Agriculture Tomasi Tunabuna has expressed serious concerns regarding the detrimental impact these nematodes can have on crop health.
According to Minister Tunabuna, the presence of root-knot nematodes disrupts the structural integrity of plant roots, which hinders their ability to absorb essential nutrients. This issue has been detected across various farming areas, emphasizing a growing threat to local agriculture.
“The presence of root-knot nematodes in Fiji is concerning. Their low economic significance in other countries does not diminish the risks they pose here,” Tunabuna remarked. He underscored the importance of vigilance in monitoring these pests, as their detection can lead to the rejection of some of Fiji’s export commodities in international markets.
Particularly at risk are root crops, which may harbor nematodes while appearing healthy, further complicating local production efforts and jeopardizing international trade. This situation calls for immediate action and strategies to mitigate the impact of these pests on Fiji’s agricultural economy, ensuring the protection of both local farmers and the broader agricultural industry. The proactive measures taken to combat this challenge could enhance the resilience of Fiji’s agriculture and secure its market standing in the face of growing environmental pressures.
