India’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket but will continue to lead the team in One Day Internationals (ODIs). At 38 years old, this decision follows media reports suggesting that he might be replaced as captain for the upcoming Test series against England. In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Rohit expressed, “It has been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites,” thanking fans for their support throughout his career.

Rohit’s Test career includes 67 matches, during which he has scored 4,301 runs with an average of 40.57 and secured 12 centuries, his highest score being an impressive 212 against South Africa in Ranchi in 2019. Since taking over Test captaincy from Virat Kohli in 2022, he has won 12 of his 24 Test matches, achieving a notable win percentage that ranks closely behind Kohli. Under his leadership, India reached the final of the World Test Championship in 2023, although they faced a disappointing defeat against Australia.

Despite experiencing setbacks, including India’s recent series losses, Rohit’s impact on Indian cricket is widely recognized. Roger Binny, the chair of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), praised Rohit for bringing “a sense of calm and assurance to the team” and noted his professionalism and sportsmanship.

Rohit will remain the captain of the ODI team, building on his recent success, including leading India to victory in the Champions Trophy. His decision to retire from Tests marks a significant moment in both his career and the future of the Indian Test team as they prepare for their upcoming five-match series against England, starting on June 20, which will also kick off a new World Test Championship cycle for both teams.

This transition could open new opportunities for younger players in the Test format while allowing Rohit to focus on his ODI leadership. With his continued involvement in one-day cricket, fans can remain optimistic about India’s future in the sport, benefitting from his experience and steady guidance.
