First-time nominees Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, and Bad Company are set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, joining a class that includes pop icon Cyndi Lauper, hip-hop pioneers OutKast, rock duo the White Stripes, and grunge legends Soundgarden. This year’s induction ceremony, reflecting the diversity and impact of various music genres, will take place in Los Angeles this fall.
Cocker, renowned for his powerful renditions and memorable performances, including his iconic performance at Woodstock, earned the support of musical stalwarts like Billy Joel and members of ZZ Top who praised his rock essence. Bad Company, known for their hits such as “Feel Like Makin’ Love” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy,” also honed a place in rock history and will be recognized for their significant contributions.
Additionally, Salt-N-Pepa, pioneers in the female rap genre, will receive the Musical Influence Award alongside the late Warren Zevon. The Musical Excellence Award will be granted to industry greats including producer Thom Bell, pianist Nicky Hopkins, and bassist Carol Kaye, marking their lasting impact on music.
Some notable nominees who will not be joining this year’s inducted class include Mariah Carey, Billy Idol, and Oasis. Chubby Checker, at 83, has expressed his eagerness for induction, humorously stating that he hopes it happens soon while he can still enjoy it.
Lauper’s recognition is significant, tracing back to her rise in the 1980s with hits like “Time After Time,” and her subsequent achievements, including a Tony Award for “Kinky Boots”. OutKast continues to hold a remarkable reputation with six Grammys, recognized for their groundbreaking influence in hip-hop, while the White Stripes left a legacy as indie rock favorites with their song “Seven Nation Army.”
Artists eligible for nomination must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years ago, and this year, the nominees were voted on by over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals, emphasizing the rigorous selection process reflective of an artist’s impact and legacy.
