Rochdale Hornets have announced the return of Fijian prop Joe Taira, marking his third stint with the club. The 35-year-old player, who began his professional career with the Hornets in 2016, has already made 104 appearances in their colors.
During his initial years between 2016 and 2018, Taira played 70 games before spending two seasons with Batley Bulldogs. He returned to Rochdale in 2021, contributing an additional 34 matches over the next two years. Following a period with community club Rochdale Mayfield, he has now signed a one-year deal with the Hornets for the 2025 season.
Taira, who has also represented Fiji in an unofficial capacity against England during a World Cup warm-up game in October 2022, expressed his excitement about rejoining the Hornets. “I’m buzzing to be back at the place I started my professional career, and I find it fitting that it’s where I will end it,” he said. He added that he aims to contribute significantly in his final playing years and help the team achieve its goals.
Last season, Rochdale finished 3rd in League 1 and reached the play-offs, where they were eliminated at home by Hunslet, the eventual winners who secured promotion. Head coach Gary Thornton welcomed Taira’s return, highlighting his known aggressive playing style and the value of his experience for the upcoming season.
This signing not only brings back a familiar face but also enhances the team’s prospects for future success. With a player like Taira on board, Rochdale Hornets fans can look forward to a competitive season ahead and the possibility of a strong playoff contention.
