Mitieli Cama and Finau Bulivolivoli were found guilty of aggravated robbery by the High Court in Labasa, following a serious incident that saw over $11,000 stolen from a cane payment. The judgment was delivered by Justice Lee James Burney on February 28, with Cama additionally convicted of resisting arrest.
The crime occurred on May 28 of the previous year when the victim withdrew $11,773 from a Bank of Baroda. While on a bus, he was ambushed by Cama, who attacked him from behind and snatched his bag containing the cash. In the commotion, Bulivolivoli pushed the victim to the ground, causing injuries to his elbows and knees.
Following the robbery, Cama was found at a motel where he falsely claimed to have obtained the money from selling marijuana. Justice Burney highlighted the strength of the prosecution’s case, remarking, “In my considered view, the prosecution case is overwhelmingly strong.” The court also heard credible testimonies from police officers confirming Cama’s violent resistance to being arrested.
