“Political Showdown: Fiji’s Healthcare Under Fire”

Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Lenora Qereqeretabua has strongly criticized the opposition for claiming that the FijiFirst party managed the health system more effectively than the current Coalition Government. During a recent parliamentary discussion, Qereqeretabua called such assertions “sickening,” pointing to a history of neglect during the tenure of the National Federation Party. She highlighted the deteriorating conditions at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, citing an unsettling situation from June 17, 2019, when Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua showcased a photo of an unrepaired toilet door in the hospital’s acute men’s ward, remaining in disrepair for over 16 months. In this case, improvised solutions, such as using an intravenous tube as a doorknob, exemplified the critical state of facilities that patients had to endure.

The minister also recalled Tikoduadua’s prior struggles in addressing drug-related issues and safety while he served in the government, underscoring the importance of learning from past errors to forge a better future for Fiji.

This criticism from the opposition aligns with concerns raised by other members, including Premila Kumar, who have accused Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of failing to manage rising issues including crime, cost of living, and the crisis in healthcare. Kumar pointed out that despite increased budget allocations for health, the system still grapples with staffing shortages and poor management.

In response, Finance Minister Biman Prasad has defended the government’s approach, highlighting their commitment to reform through calls for a comprehensive review of the health sector.
