The High Court in Lautoka has found Roneel Kumar and Gaston Kean guilty of aggravated robbery and theft connected to a break-in that occurred four years ago on March 27. Justice Aruna Aluthge issued the verdict, citing compelling evidence presented by the prosecution, notably CCTV surveillance footage captured at the crime scene.

The duo was implicated in illegally entering Diana Ali Nand’s residence, where they made off with a laptop, $5,750 in cash, a gold watch, two gold bangles, and a gold chain. The prosecution successfully demonstrated that Kumar and Kean intended to permanently deprive Nand of her belongings.

The defense’s arguments were deemed unconvincing. Justice Aluthge observed that Kumar’s alibi, supported by the testimony of his partner, Astika, lacked credibility. The court noted that Astika’s evidence was questionable, given her obvious desire to protect Kumar and her conflicting statements.

Additionally, Kumar’s credibility suffered further damage from his efforts to sway a key witness by sending money via MPAiSA, which bolstered the prosecution’s position. Similarly, Kean’s defense faltered, as the court rejected his supposed alibi related to a congenital condition and found a person resembling him on the CCTV footage.

Consequently, both Kumar and Kean were pronounced guilty on all charges, with Justice Aluthge concluding that the evidence overwhelmingly supported their involvement. The court is set to announce their sentences on Friday.

This outcome sends a strong message about accountability and the judicial system’s commitment to upholding justice. The rigorous examination of evidence and the rejection of unsubstantiated claims underscore the importance of robust legal processes in ensuring community safety.

In a broader context, the conviction serves as a reminder of ongoing efforts to combat crime and protect the rights of individuals. As society continues to value justice and transparency, such rulings could inspire confidence in law enforcement and the judiciary.
