A historic bond between Ashfaaq Khan’s family and the vanua of Nawaka has been further solidified with the recent upgrade of a road in the village. The road, now named M E Khan Road in honor of Mr. Khan’s grandfather, Mohammed Esaq Khan, is a significant improvement for both the villagers of Nawaka and nearby residents.

The upgrade, funded by the Khan family and inaugurated by the Tui Nawaka, Ratu Joeli Derenalagi Naevo, features modern tar-sealing and proper drainage systems on both sides. This development serves as a vital infrastructure enhancement for the community, where Mohammed Esaq Khan was known as the first Indian settler in Nawaka, establishing himself as a noteworthy businessman in Nadi from the late 1940s to the 1960s.

Mr. Khan’s legacy includes founding M.E.Khan and Company, which operated various enterprises, including an electrical powerhouse, butcher shop, ice factory, and a dairy farm providing fresh milk to Nadi’s residents. “This road stands as a lasting tribute to his legacy and contributions to Nawaka,” said Mr. Ashfaaq Khan, managing director of Al Hamd Smart Living.

The road’s upgrade holds the promise of enhanced accessibility and support for the community, echoing sentiments found in similar recent projects like the newly inaugurated access road in Wailailai Melanesia community. Just as that road represents a new chapter of connectivity for its residents, the M E Khan Road is poised to foster closer ties within the Nawaka village and ensure lasting improvements in the quality of life for its inhabitants.

The opening of such infrastructure not only benefits day-to-day logistics but is also a beacon of hope and resilience, showcasing the vital role of community development in preserving legacies and enhancing living standards. The positive impact of these improvements is likely to be felt for generations to come, reaffirming the importance of community support and family legacies in fostering progress.
