The rise in road fatalities this year has raised alarm among authorities, with 76 deaths reported thus far, up from 66 during the corresponding period last year. Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga has highlighted that this figure does not even account for three additional fatalities recorded last Friday, emphasizing the pressing concern this poses to public safety.
In response to this troubling trend, police are actively conducting road patrols and breath testing operations across the nation. However, despite these efforts, many drivers seem to ignore traffic regulations when police visibility is low. Lutunauga is calling on motorists to take greater responsibility for their actions, stressing that reckless behavior is directly linked to the loss of lives on the roads.
The police commissioner’s commitment to enhancing road safety is evident in plans for a sustained presence on highways. He has made it clear that law enforcement will be uncompromising in addressing traffic violations, ensuring that offenders face appropriate consequences. As the year continues, the hope remains that increased awareness and accountability among drivers will lead to safer road conditions for everyone.
