The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is reiterating its call for drivers to take greater responsibility on the roads in light of two tragic accidents that occurred last weekend, resulting in two fatalities in Korolevu, Sigatoka, and Wairuku, Ra. LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa indicated that preliminary investigations into these incidents revealed that the drivers may have lost control of their vehicles, underscoring a persistent issue of reckless driving.

Despite multiple safety warnings and public advisories, Mr. Rokosawa expressed concern over the continuing prevalence of reckless behaviors like speeding and improper overtaking. He highlighted that these actions not only jeopardize the lives of the drivers but also those of other road users. “Speeding dramatically increases the risk of a crash,” he stated, urging all motorists to adopt safer driving practices.

Moreover, adverse weather conditions, including rain and strong winds, have been noted to significantly affect driving safety. Rokosawa emphasized the need for drivers to remain particularly vigilant in such situations, advising that they reduce their speed and maintain safe distances from other vehicles while ensuring that their vehicle lights and wipers are functioning correctly.

By promoting heightened awareness of potential hazards during inclement weather and encouraging responsible behaviors on the roads, the LTA aims to foster a culture of safety among all road users. Mr. Rokosawa’s call to action reflects a broader concern regarding road safety, with previous articles indicating a trend of negligent driving despite efforts to raise awareness and minimize fatalities.

Collective responsibility is essential for promoting safer roads, as the drive for road safety is not solely the responsibility of authorities— it requires collaborative efforts from everyone. These tragic accidents serve as reminder that concerted efforts towards responsible driving can ultimately save lives.

This proactive approach, supported by ongoing educational campaigns and stricter enforcement of traffic laws, holds promise for reducing road accidents and fostering safer environments for all road users in Fiji. By embracing this shared commitment to road safety, it is hoped that communities can work together to minimize future tragedies.
