At just 16 years of age, Jasvil Rokoro is poised to make her senior international debut with Fiji’s national women’s cricket team during the inaugural Four Nations tournament T20 series taking place in New Caledonia. This moment marks a significant achievement in her burgeoning cricket career.
Rokoro, a student at Suva Grammar School, is among three debutants selected for the squad. Her journey began at the young age of 11 when she participated in the Suva senior women’s league. She originally played for Nausori Majidez in 2020 before transferring to Suva Grammar in 2023, where she excelled in both boys’ and girls’ under-19 teams.
Last year, at only 15, she became the youngest member of Fiji’s first Under-19 women’s cricket team that participated in the World Cup qualifiers held in Bali, Indonesia. Her interest in the sport was sparked by her parents, who established a women’s team in Nausori to create opportunities for local girls. Rokoro began her cricketing journey as a water girl, using makeshift equipment before finally making her league debut when the team faced a player shortage.
As she prepares for this international tournament, Rokoro is eager to learn and enhance her skills as an all-rounder. “For me, this tournament is about improving my game and learning as much as I can,” she expressed. The tournament also serves as crucial preparation for the World Cup qualifier, which Fiji is set to host in September, with aspirations to boost its world ranking.
Despite facing challenges with training venues, the team is determined to seize every opportunity. Rokoro attributes her success and resolve to her parents, who have been instrumental in motivating her to strive for excellence academically and athletically. “I’m honoured and blessed to represent my family, village, school, and country,” she said, reflecting her pride in her heritage and the support she has received.
This upcoming tournament not only marks a remarkable step in Rokoro’s young career but also reflects the growing emergence of women’s cricket in Fiji, inspiring other young athletes to pursue their dreams in sports.
