Michella’e Stolz, an 18-year-old rugby talent from Naselesele Village in Taveuni, is realizing her lifelong dream by joining the Vodafone Fijiana XV squad. As she embarks on this new chapter, Stolz’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and spirituality, attributes she credits as vital to her journey.

Stolz has been enamored with rugby since she first picked up the ball at the age of 11, initially playing alongside the boys at Hora Hora Rugby Club in New Zealand. She has expressed her determination to represent Fiji, saying, “I always wanted to make it my goal to play for Fiji and represent my country.” This aspiration was inspired by her admiration for the senior players on the Fijiana team, whom she looks up to and considers role models.

Her journey took a significant turn when she earned a spot on the NZ Fijians during the Global Youth Sevens, which led to her selection for the Fijiana team. She credits her strong spiritual beliefs for her success, stating, “Starting my day with Bible readings and prayers empowers me during physical training.” The supportive environment fostered by her fellow teammates has made her feel welcomed in the squad, fueling her momentum as they prepare for their upcoming challenges.

Stolz’s journey mirrors the growing trend of young female athletes in Fiji, such as fellow players like Krystelle Thaggard, who aspire to make a mark in rugby. As they step into pivotal roles on national teams and contribute to elevating women’s rugby on an international stage, their narratives serve as a testament to the bright future of the sport in Fiji.

The upcoming Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship presents an exciting opportunity not just for Stolz but for the entire Fijiana XV team, showcasing the blend of emerging talents and experienced players aimed at achieving success on the global stage. With their collective spirit, dedication, and support, this new generation of athletes embodies hope and potential for the growth of women’s rugby in Fiji.
