Peceli Kina Jr., a rising star in the rugby world and son of former Fijian test prop Peceli Kina Sr., recently shared insights about his experiences in the sport. Showcasing his potential, Kina played a decisive role during a match for Marist St Michael’s, where he secured the ball at a critical lineout, leading his team to a thrilling victory with a final score of 10-7. This moment underscores his developing skills, particularly impressive given his height of nearly two meters and weight of 106 kg.

At the young age of 21, Kina aspires to make his mark on the Fijian national team, following in his father’s successful footsteps. Currently honing his abilities with the Rotorua club in New Zealand, he has caught the attention of Bay of Plenty Colts coach Peter Spry, which offers him an opportunity to enhance his gameplay through professional mentoring.

Despite the friendly climate of New Zealand, Kina has noted the challenges posed by the colder weather, acknowledging his strong ties to his roots. His rugby journey includes notable achievements at Ratu Kadavulevu School and a key contribution to Lelean Memorial School’s victory in the Deans Trophy.

His father articulated a common sentiment among Fijian athletes regarding the necessity of international exposure for talent development. Kina Sr. remarked, “With us Fijians, we have the talent; what we need is to send our players overseas to acquire the knowledge needed to adapt to the modern game.”

Motivated by the desire to not only achieve similar success as his father but also to surpass it, Kina Jr. is determined to earn a Fiji jersey and take pride in representing his heritage on the international stage. His story illustrates the potential for young Fijian athletes to gain experience and aspire to excel in rugby, highlighting how dedication and hard work can lead to remarkable opportunities in the sport. With such determination, Kina Jr.’s journey is a testament to the promising future ahead for aspiring Fijian rugby players, embodying the belief that dreams can indeed materialize through perseverance.
