The Fiji Police Force has reported a troubling 18 percent rise in crime for February 2025 compared to February 2024. This increase is largely attributed to theft, which surged dramatically from 276 cases to 414. Notably, three significant theft incidents alone incurred losses totaling over $189,000 from various businesses.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has pointed out a rising trend in cyber-related crimes, specifically highlighting 52 cases of obtaining financial advantage through deception. This increase may reflect greater public awareness and willingness to report such crimes, with many incidents occurring in previous years but only now being recorded.
The report further details other serious offenses contributing to the crime increase, including 261 incidents of assault causing actual bodily harm, 203 cases of unlawful possession of illicit drugs, 159 incidents of burglary and aggravated robbery, and 112 cases of criminal intimidation. While these statistics present challenges for law enforcement regarding public safety, they also signal significant opportunities for improved police-community cooperation.
Earlier reports have indicated similar trends, where the Fiji Police Force has committed to enhancing their investigative strategies and building trust within the community. For example, although serious crimes have risen, there have been reductions in crimes against women and children, hinting at the effectiveness of community initiatives and police responses.
Maintaining a consistent focus on crime prevention and fostering open communication between law enforcement and residents will be crucial in creating a safer community. The collaboration between the police and local communities has the potential to reverse current crime trends and bolster safety across Fiji, demonstrating a path forward despite the current challenges.
