Richmond Methodist High School from Kadavu is making its return to the Fiji Secondary School Finals athletics competition this year after last participating in 2023. Coach Aminiasi Raitekiteki has emphasized the school’s ambitions for success, aiming for their 19 athletes to qualify for finals in their respective events.

As part of a planned three-year program, this is only the first year they’re attempting to reach the finals, with plans to contend for medals in the coming years. The team faced challenges along the way, particularly in fundraising efforts, managing to gather $5,000 through community support, including contributions from ex-scholars abroad, and through fundraising activities in the local villages.

Reflecting on their past performances, Raitekiteki noted that last year they prioritized academics, which may have impacted their athletic performance. However, their girls’ team shone brightly by winning 18 medals—seven gold, eight silver, and three bronze—finishing second in the Maritime zone for the girls’ category, while the boys’ team achieved a commendable fourth place with three gold medals.

“Thank God for his guidance, the support of the school administration, and contributions from ex-scholars have been instrumental,” Raitekiteki stated, highlighting the collective efforts of the community.

The sentiment of hope and community is mirrored across other schools preparing for the Fiji Finals. Events have fostered unity, showcasing the spirit of camaraderie among athletes and highlighting the growth of talent in Fiji. As Richmond Methodist High School looks forward to the competition, it represents not just a chance to excel but also a celebration of resilience and dedication within the realm of Fijian athletics.
