Rewa and Lakeba rugby unions are set to revive the Cabenalotu Challenge after a four-year hiatus, marking a significant step in maintaining their traditional ties. This competition stands as a symbol of unity between the Gone Turaga na Tui Tubou and the Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi.

Originally initiated in 2020, the idea arose from a desire to foster rugby development in Lakeba. However, it quickly evolved into a lasting connection forged during a time of adversity. Rewa Rugby president Macanawai Mataitini recalled that the 2020 tour was intended for an 11-day engagement but extended due to the devastation caused by Cyclone Yasa. The Rewa team stayed behind to assist with the island’s recovery efforts.

Mataitini emphasized that the connection was further strengthened by shared religious values. The Cabenalotu trophy is not just a sports award; it represents the introduction of Christianity in Lakeba and its arrival in Rewa when it spread to Viti Levu. This historical significance motivated the unions to establish the event as an annual tradition.

The COVID-19 pandemic and other obligations had prevented the match’s continuation in recent years. However, with the current situation allowing, the challenge will take place this year. Mataitini expressed the hope that the younger generation of both Rewa and Lakeba will embrace and uphold this cherished relationship.

Fans are encouraged to support both teams, with the main match scheduled for tomorrow at 3 PM at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. Prior to that, their development teams will compete at 1 PM.

This revival of the Cabenalotu Challenge not only reflects the resilience of community ties but also serves as a reminder of the importance of sports in forging and maintaining relationships. It encourages a sense of solidarity and continuity between generations, fostering a bright future for both rugby communities.

In summary, the return of the Cabenalotu Challenge symbolizes a celebration of connection, community, and resilience in the face of adversity, promising an exciting event that honors both heritage and friendship.
