The Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi has officially inaugurated its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber, marking a significant advancement in the treatment options available for chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The launch event was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Biman Prasad, who highlighted the critical importance of this innovative service in addressing some of Fiji’s pressing health issues.
During his address, Professor Prasad pointed to the alarming statistic that a diabetes-related amputation occurs every 12 hours in Fiji, emphasizing the urgent need for advanced healthcare solutions. “The launch of HBOT is a major step forward in improving health outcomes and reducing the need for amputations,” he stated. The new chamber will operate 24/7, designed to accelerate recovery processes and significantly enhance patient care.
The introduction of HBOT not only aims to benefit local Fijians but also seeks to attract patients from other Pacific Island nations, positioning Fiji as a regional healthcare leader. Professor Prasad expressed hope that this initiative will encourage collaborations with other healthcare providers and enhance medical tourism, contributing to the growth of the healthcare sector in Fiji.
Furthermore, the launch coincided with the introduction of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, which offers healthcare discounts to active cane farmers, showcasing a broader commitment to improving healthcare accessibility for rural communities.
This development signifies a promising direction for Fiji’s healthcare, addressing chronic conditions with advanced treatment options. The introduction of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is not just about tackling immediate health concerns but also signifies a proactive approach towards a healthier future for the nation. The commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and outcomes holds hopeful prospects for those suffering from chronic illnesses, paving the way for better health management and quality of life.
