The Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi has officially inaugurated its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber, marking a significant advancement in the treatment of chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The launch was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, who emphasized the critical need for such innovative healthcare solutions in Fiji.
During the launch, Professor Prasad highlighted alarming statistics regarding non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes, which are the leading causes of premature deaths in the country. He noted that there is a concerning rate of one diabetes-related amputation occurring every 12 hours in Fiji, underscoring the urgent need for advancements in medical treatments to change this trend.
The state-of-the-art HBOT chamber is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It promises to expedite recovery processes and significantly reduce the necessity for amputations due to complications from diabetes and other chronic conditions. This initiative reflects Fiji’s commitment to bolstering healthcare infrastructure and improving health outcomes for its citizens.
Moreover, the introduction of HBOT is not limited to Fijians alone; it aims to attract patients from neighboring Pacific Island nations, positioning Fiji as a leading healthcare provider in the region. Professor Prasad expressed optimism that this service could foster collaborations with regional healthcare providers and promote medical tourism, benefitting both local and regional patients.
In addition to the launch of HBOT, the event also introduced the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, providing healthcare discounts to active cane growers in Fiji. This initiative aims to enhance healthcare accessibility for rural communities, demonstrating a broader commitment to improving public health.
Overall, the launch of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at PSH is a hopeful development, representing a proactive approach to tackling serious health issues and promoting better health outcomes for the community. By investing in advanced treatment options and healthcare services, Fiji is paving the way toward a healthier nation and improved quality of life for its residents.
