Kahuto Pacific has officially launched “Moana Data Services” (MDS), a cutting-edge initiative aimed at improving spatial and geospatial data services across Fiji and the Pacific Islands. This service features a specialized aircraft equipped with high-resolution imaging systems designed to transform planning and development in the region.

Co-founder Christopher Saili highlighted that MDS offers national-scale imagery and LiDar (Light Detection and Ranging), empowering town planners, government officials, and land developers to make informed decisions about climate-resilient infrastructure. He noted that LiDar technology is particularly valuable for flood modeling, a significant concern for Fiji, as it can help in planning safe routes for roads and town settlements.

A distinguishing feature of MDS is its local ownership and management. Saili emphasized the importance of having access to live aerial data that is both innovative and tailored to local needs. This initiative is backed by $458,000 in funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aligning with ADB’s commitment to stimulate local economies and address funding gaps for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Fiji and the broader Pacific region.

Fredrik Helsingen, an investment manager at ADB, expressed confidence in the potential impact of MDS, signifying a positive step towards enhancing access to real-time data, which is crucial for effective decision-making in development projects. The ADB’s support aims to foster local business growth and create sustainable economic opportunities, responding to the challenges faced by MSMEs in accessing traditional financing.

In addition to this, Kahuto Pacific plans to collaborate with government ministries, landowners, and other development organizations to effectively utilize MDS, thereby ensuring that Fijians can capture and manage their live aerial data efficiently.

This initiative not only emphasizes technological advancement in infrastructure planning but also offers a hopeful outlook for enhanced economic resilience in Fiji, paving the way for greater sustainability and developmental impact across the region.
