Booms designed to collect rubbish have been installed in Nabukalou Creek as part of a collaborative initiative involving Trash Boom Pacific, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Suva City Council (SCC). This deployment aims to address the ongoing challenge of plastic and waste pollution affecting this historically beautiful waterway.

SCC expressed that the installation of the trash boom represents proactive steps towards restoring Nabukalou Creek’s natural beauty. Funded by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, this effort aligns with UNDP Pacific’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and environmental conservation within the region.

The trash boom functions as a filter, preventing debris, plastics, and other pollutants from moving downstream, which will significantly enhance water quality and benefit both marine life and public health. This is important not only for the local ecosystem but also for nearby communities that rely on clean waterways for various activities.

Similar initiatives, such as the recent coastal cleanup in Navua, demonstrate a growing commitment to environmental action within the region. For instance, during that event, around 300 kilograms of waste were collected in just 90 minutes, showcasing active public engagement and dedication to maintaining clean coastal environments. Such community-led efforts, backed by organizations like the Pacific Ocean Litter Youth Project (POLYP), highlight the importance of collective action in combatting pollution and promoting responsible waste management.

The positive trajectory toward restoring and protecting waterways, like Nabukalou Creek, inspires hope for a cleaner and more sustainable future for Fiji. The engagement of multiple stakeholders underscores the effectiveness of partnerships in tackling environmental challenges and fostering stewardship among community members. As actions to preserve these vital ecosystems continue to grow, it reflects a promising shift towards a more eco-conscious society.
