In an inspiring effort to revitalize the Tamil language in Fiji, two teachers from India are currently conducting classes at Penang Sangam School in Rakiraki and Labasa Sangam Primary School. This initiative was announced by Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, during the 96th TISI Sangam Annual Convention, revealing that the classes are also available online to broaden access across Fiji.

The revival of Tamil, a language that has seen a dramatic decline over the last 80 years, promises to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Tamil-speaking community in Fiji. The initiative was launched through a partnership between the Indian government, Fiji’s Ministry of Education, and the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam, reflecting a commitment to cultural preservation and community engagement.

Recognizing Tamil as one of the oldest classical languages in the world, Mr. Mehta emphasized the importance of this program in maintaining cultural identity and enhancing understanding among diverse communities in Fiji. The move has been warmly welcomed by the local Tamil-speaking community, particularly the descendants of Girmitiyas who migrated from Tamil Nadu in the early 20th century.

Additionally, Mr. Mehta highlighted that beyond just diplomatic relations, the bonds between India and Fiji are deep-rooted in a shared history and cultural legacies. This initiative not only serves to reconnect the Tamil-speaking populace with their roots but also enriches the multicultural tapestry of Fiji, fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration.

This revival offers a hopeful perspective for cultural preservation, allowing future generations in Fiji to engage with their heritage while promoting linguistic diversity and community spirit. As students participate in these classes and related cultural activities, such as quizzes organized by the Indian High Commission, the initiative marks a significant step towards fostering deeper connections between India and Fiji while celebrating their rich cultural heritage.
