Patrick Bower, the president of the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Association, has called for primary schools across Fiji to appoint dedicated physical education (PE) teachers. Currently, only a handful of primary schools, including the International School Suva, employ PE teachers, which Bower highlights as a significant gap in the education system.
During the recent Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, Bower emphasized that while many talented young athletes showcased their skills, the lack of structured physical education programs at the primary level is concerning. He pointed out that physical education encompasses a broader curriculum beyond just popular sports like rugby, soccer, and netball, and is crucial for the holistic development of children.
Despite some organizational challenges on the first day of the games, Bower commended the efforts of officials and teachers, noting the event’s successful execution despite being an hour behind schedule. He mentioned that logistical issues such as late entries from districts and mismatched athlete representations were obstacles they faced. Bower stressed the importance of team commitment, stating that once a team is selected, athletes should adhere to that team, even if they engage in other sports like rugby.
Although there were minor setbacks such as rain and some athletes finding their way to events, Bower was overall pleased with the performances and praised the coaches for their hard work in preparing the students. The competition, which resumed last year in Lautoka after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, has fostered a renewed enthusiasm for athletics among students and is set to conclude today.
