Alipate Bilavucu, a resident of Namaka, is advocating for the reinstatement of constituency voting, arguing that it fosters a closer connection between voters and their representatives. During his presentation to the Electoral Law Reform Commission in Nadi, he expressed dissatisfaction with the current voting system, stating, “With the constituency voting we knew the people who we were voting for.” He emphasized that prior to recent changes, voters had direct access to their representatives, making it easier to voice concerns.

Bilavucu criticized the current system for encouraging elected officials to neglect their constituents once in office, highlighting that campaign visits often don’t lead to sustained engagement. Additionally, he suggested that the voting age should be raised from 18 to 21, believing that young voters may lack the maturity necessary for informed decision-making.

This conversation echoes earlier discussions from various public consultations throughout Fiji, where participants have advocated for changes to improve voter engagement and representation. For instance, during similar consultations, many citizens have voiced support for raising the voting age and recognized the need for greater involvement of young adults in the electoral process to ensure their voices are represented.

As the Electoral Law Reform Commission conducts consultations across the Western Division, including stops in Lautoka and Sigatoka, there is hope that these initiatives will lead to reforms that enhance representation, making the electoral system more inclusive and reflective of the diverse opinions within Fiji’s population. The integration of citizen feedback in the electoral reform process signals a commitment to developing a more responsive democratic framework.

With ongoing discussions and proposed reforms, there remains optimism that Fiji’s political landscape can evolve to better meet the needs and expectations of all its citizens, especially the youth, who represent a significant portion of the electorate.
