A substantial investment of $7.5 million is being directed towards the redevelopment of the former Nadi Bay Resort, now named the Grand Melanesian Resort Wailoaloa. This acquisition, purchased by Grand Melanesian Hotel for $2.5 million in February 2023, demonstrates a strong vision for transforming the property, which was acquired through a mortgage sale.

Director Nitin Hira Lal is confident in the property’s future despite the high renovation costs. “We believed in our vision and its potential, particularly with the current state of tourism in Fiji,” he stated. Renovations have accounted for around $5 million over the past two years, with plans for an additional $1 million investment later this year. Mr. Lal shared that the extensive renovation has resulted in a complete overhaul of the resort, leaving only the original structure intact and producing fully refurbished rooms ranging from shared dorms to luxury apartments.

The upcoming resort boasts a variety of amenities, including two swimming pools, two conference rooms, and three bars, aimed at enhancing the guest experience. Once operational, it will create about 25 full-time job positions, contributing positively to the local employment landscape.

Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, praised the successful overhaul of the resort, highlighting its value to Fiji’s tourism sector. “Congratulations to the Grand Melanesian Resort Wailoaloa on its impressive transformation. It offers an excellent range of accommodations at attractive rates,” he remarked.

Additionally, Lawrence Kumar, former Special Administrator Chair of Nadi Town Council, pointed out the encouraging signals this project sends regarding rising investor confidence in Fiji’s hospitality sector. He acknowledged the clear demand for improved hospitality services while also noting the potential challenges in converting interest into real growth. Nonetheless, GMR’s commitment to the industry reflects a forward-thinking approach.

The transformation of the Grand Melanesian Resort Wailoaloa not only revitalizes a significant property in Nadi but also embodies a long-term optimistic outlook for Fiji’s tourism industry, aligning with recent initiatives aimed at augmenting accommodation options in the region.

The renovation indicates a positive trajectory for the community and the tourism sector, suggesting potential growth in visitor numbers and job creation, thereby fostering economic development in Fiji.
