Revitalizing Infrastructure: PWD Unveils New Heavy Machinery

The Public Works Department (PWD) is poised to resume its activities following its reinstatement by the government last year. In recent months, after being closed by the previous administration, PWD has ramped up its operations with the acquisition of three trucks, two excavators, and two bulldozers, delivered in Suva on Wednesday.

The handover ceremony for the newly received machinery took place at the Vision Motors Showroom in Vatuwaqa, involving officials from the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport.

Paula Baleilevuka, the permanent secretary of the ministry, stated that this timely delivery of equipment would significantly enhance infrastructure and capacity building. He noted that these machines represent a new set of resources for the ministry.

“These machines will improve road standards and conditions, facilitating better access for economic activities,” Mr. Baleilevuka explained. “They will also strengthen our ability to carry out road construction and maintenance tasks in rural and remote areas.”

The ministry has received two large excavators, two D6 bulldozers, two dumper trucks, and one flat-top truck, all valued at $1,627,104. This financial year, the ministry has been allocated $5 million to improve and enhance rural roads. Mr. Baleilevuka confirmed that the new equipment will be employed in forthcoming projects.
