The refurbishment of the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital is gradually advancing despite earlier skepticism. Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu recently inspected critical areas, starting with the nearly completed installation of a new lift in the West Wing. Additionally, the hospital kitchen is undergoing significant upgrades, improving food preparation capabilities.

Team Leader Rup Mani, who has been with CWM for over a decade, expressed her satisfaction with the new kitchen facilities. Enhanced equipment such as ovens and sinks will help maintain food quality. Senior Dietitian Shobna Shalini acknowledged minor challenges with the new systems but noted that the refurbishments are a much-needed improvement that should enhance patient service.

Minister Lalabalavu also toured the pediatric ward and Central Sterile Supply Department, where new sterilizers will soon be operational. He concluded his visit at the operating theatre, emphasizing the need for faster renovations. Currently, four out of the eight operational theatres are functional, with the remaining nearing completion.

This refurbishment aligns with previous announcements regarding substantial renovations at CWM Hospital aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in Fiji. The ongoing efforts reflect a governmental commitment to address the longstanding issues surrounding hospital infrastructure, including previous criticisms about malfunctioning lifts and outdated facilities.

As the improvements take shape, there is a growing sense of hope that these upgrades will lead to enhanced healthcare services, benefiting both patients and healthcare workers alike. The investment in modern facilities represents significant progress and a positive shift in Fiji’s healthcare landscape.
