The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), in partnership with the Suva City Council, is actively working on vital pavement improvements at the Suva Bus Stand. This project is aimed at enhancing the functionality and accessibility of this busy transportation hub, which serves thousands of commuters each day.

The FRA highlighted that this upgrade is crucial for resolving long-standing infrastructure challenges. In the initial phase of the project, efforts are focused on addressing persistent drainage issues through essential jetting works to clear existing blockages, ensuring effective water runoff. This prevents the accumulation of stagnant water, which can damage the pavement and create a less pleasant experience for passengers.

Following the resolution of drainage challenges, the project will advance to extensive pavement refurbishment. This overhaul aims to restore the bus stand to optimal serviceable conditions, making it safer and more convenient for all users, particularly for the elderly, disabled individuals, and those carrying heavy luggage.

The need for this improvement was previously pointed out by local authorities, who acknowledged the deteriorating conditions due to potholes and drainage problems. Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has called for public patience during this upgrade process, which has been rolled out in phases, each targeting specific infrastructural aspects.

The proactive collaboration between the SCC and FRA signals a promising direction for public transport infrastructure in Suva. With the ongoing enhancements, there is hope for a safer, more reliable commuting experience that will not only improve transit conditions but also encourage greater public transport use, ultimately benefiting the community.

This commitment to improving the Suva Bus Stand reflects a broader dedication to public infrastructure, showcasing the ongoing efforts by local authorities to meet commuters’ needs. With the project progressing, residents can look forward to notable enhancements in transportation safety and functionality.
