Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka has taken a significant step towards improving educational facilities by unveiling the Infrastructure Assessment Report for schools in the Suva-Nausori region. This report serves as a crucial foundation for enhancing the learning environments of students in the area.
The assessment examined 86 schools along the Suva-Nausori corridor, revealing urgent issues such as overcrowded classrooms, outdated sanitation facilities, and insufficient disaster resilience plans. Alarmingly, previous data indicated that around 70% of these schools were operating beyond their intended capacity, negatively impacting the educational experience.
To tackle these challenges, funding has been secured from the Australian Government via its Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The first phase of the upgrades will kick off at Suva Primary School, with a total of 41 schools set to receive improvements to their water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. These enhancements are essential for providing students with a safe and clean environment for their studies.
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro emphasized that the renovations will not only address sanitation issues but also focus on bolstering disaster resilience, ensuring that school structures can withstand natural disasters. Furthermore, the upgrades will prioritize accessibility for students with disabilities, incorporating features such as ramps and accessible restrooms into the newly designed facilities.
In a move towards sustainability, the renovations will include the use of termite-resistant materials and solar energy systems, fostering eco-friendly practices while delivering long-term benefits to the local community. This approach aligns with ongoing calls for urgent reforms in Fiji’s educational infrastructure.
