Street children in Nadi experienced a significant moment of reunification with their families yesterday, courtesy of a program spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. As part of this initiative, the Ministry organized an Easter camp for these vulnerable youths.
Minister Jese Saukuru highlighted the efforts made to repair familial bonds, stating that the Ministry took essential steps by facilitating traditional reconciliation practices (Matanigasau) to address past grievances and foster connections. He noted that some individuals from this group will also be accommodated in safe houses in Nadi and Mulomulo while the government works toward establishing permanent facilities.
The emotional farewells captured the transformative impact of the initiative, with participants expressing their happiness and relief at the prospect of leaving the streets behind for good. They were appreciative of the empowerment training and skills development they received, as well as the spiritual instruction that underscored their journey toward rebuilding their lives.
This event reflects broader efforts by the Ministry to not only reunite families but also to ensure ongoing support for these youths through training programs, similar to previous initiatives aimed at assisting street-dwelling individuals. For instance, in a related effort, 46 street youth were engaged in empowerment training during a youth camp held in Lautoka, further illustrating the government’s commitment to providing support and opportunities for those at risk.
Such comprehensive programs emphasize the importance of community involvement, empowerment, and strategic collaboration among various governmental departments and organizations. By creating safe spaces and promoting skill development, these initiatives align with the overall goal of building a brighter future for Fiji’s young population.
The heartwarming success of this reunification not only showcases the potential for significant positive change in the lives of these young individuals but also reflects a hopeful collective commitment to nurturing and uplifting vulnerable communities throughout Fiji.
