In the province of Macuata, some villages are facing challenges in reintegrating men and women who have served time in prison back into their communities, according to Ranadiceva Raluna, a member of the province’s care committee. A troubling incident highlighted by Ms. Raluna involved a former inmate who, upon returning home, was met with outright rejection from his own village.

She explained that despite having fulfilled his sentence and being eager to start anew, the man’s community refused to welcome him back. It took the intervention of a senior pastor, who appealed to the villagers on the man’s behalf, to facilitate his acceptance. Raluna voiced her concerns, stating, “If our own families and communities will not accept them, then who will?”

This rejection can exacerbate the already difficult journey for former prisoners seeking to rebuild their lives and may even lead them to revert to criminal behavior. Currently, there are 48 individuals from Macuata incarcerated, with the majority at Vaturekuka Prison in Labasa, while 10 are housed at Korovou Prison, which has the second-highest inmate count in the region.

Ms. Raluna emphasized the importance of empathy and understanding from families, church leaders, and village elders. She urged these community figures to remember that the process of rehabilitation extends beyond incarceration. “Everyone deserves a second chance,” she stated, highlighting the dangerous implications of turning away individuals striving for a new beginning. “When we shut our doors on them, we are shutting the door on change.”

This call for acceptance is a poignant reminder of the collective responsibility communities share in fostering environments that promote rehabilitation and support. Through compassion, communities have the opportunity to facilitate positive transformations and reduce the cycle of recidivism, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
